Bibb BOE Votes to Apply for School Improvement Grants
The vote is in. The Bibb County School District will apply for a federal grant that could bring millions of dollars to four under performing high schools.
Acting Superintendent Sylvia McGee made a recommendation to pursue a "transformation" model, which would allow two of the effected principals - Gail Gilbert at Rutland and Herbert Hodges at Northeast - to remain at their respective schools, since they've only been in place for less than three years. Tyrone Bacon at Southwest and Ron McCall at Hutchings Career Center will be replaced.
Lynn Farmer, Bibb County Board of Education Member, tells 41 NBC News, "I see this as an opportunity for us to perhaps restructure the discipline programs in some of these schools, and place the students who can't behave in a regular school environment into another environment where they can learn elsewhere."
School leaders will meet with the state Department of Education this upcoming Monday, in Atlanta. After that, the district has until April 15th to submit the grant application for review.
