Last-place Pirates Beat Braves Again

James McDonald pitched seven innings, Ronny Cedeno's triple keyed a five-run seventh and the last-place Pittsburgh Pirates beat the slumping Atlanta Braves for the second straight day, winning 5-0 on Tuesday night.

The Braves fell into a first-place tie with Philadelphia in the NL East after being in sole possession of the division lead every day since May 31. The Phillies played Florida on Tuesday night.

Pirates 3, Braves 1

Neil Walker hit a two-run homer, Brian Burres limited Atlanta to one run over six innings in his first start in more than three months and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the slumping Braves 3-1.

Despite losing its fourth in five games, Atlanta was assured of remaining in first place in the National League East for at least another day when Florida beat Philadelphia 7-1 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. The Braves own a half-game lead over the Phillies.

The Braves have led the division every day since May 31, but have lost six games off that edge since July 22.

Marlins 7, Braves 6, 10 Innings.

Sent to the plate after a scary scene, pinch-hitter Scott Cousins delivered a game-winning single in the 10th inning for his first big league hit and the Florida Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 7-6 Sunday.

The Braves had overcome a 6-0 deficit. They began the day with a one-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East.

Cousins batted after Emilio Bonifacio lined a foul that struck teammate Logan Morrison in the helmet in the on-deck circle. Morrison collapsed face-down as the crowd gasped, but quickly rose and walked off the field accompanied by a trainer.

Roethlisberger’s Sentence Reduced

Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, will be back on the football field earlier than expected.

Today NFL officials reduced his suspension from six games to four.

The quarterback was suspended back in April, when he was accused of sexually assaulting a Georgia college student after a night of drinking at a Milledgeville bar.  However, Roethlisberger was never charged.

The quarterback will return to the field October 17.

Roddick Upset by Tipsarevic in 2nd Round of Open

Andy Roddick was upset in the second round of the U.S. Open, losing 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (4) to 44th-ranked Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia on Wednesday night.

The ninth-seeded Roddick won his only Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2003, and he also was the runner-up in 2006. His loss leaves Roger Federer as the only past men's champion in the field.

This early exit follows a fourth-round loss for Roddick at Wimbledon. He revealed recently that he had a mild case of mononucleosis.

Tipsarevic moves into the third round at the U.S. Open for the first time.

Hanson Allows 1 Hit Over 7 Innings, Finally Wins

Tommy Hanson finally got some run support and won for the first time in nearly two months, allowing just one hit in seven shutout innings to lead the Atlanta Braves past the New York Mets 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Omar Infante and Jason Heyward combined for seven hits at the top of the Braves' order, Martin Prado drove in two runs with a first-inning double and it could have been worse for the Mets if they hadn't thrown out two Atlanta runners at the plate.

Sports Gamblers Getting BlackBerry App in Nevada

Getting money down on your favorite sports team is getting a little easier in Nevada with the first-ever wagering application for smart phones.

It won't work in the U.S. outside the Silver State - the only place where sports gambling is legal - but its technology is sophisticated enough to let visitors from other states place bets while they're here.

Ross Grand Slam Carries Braves to 9-2 Win

David Ross hit his first career grand slam to cap a seven-run inning made possible by Luis Castillo's error, and the Atlanta Braves routed the New York Mets 9-2 on Tuesday night.

The Mets scored two runs in the fifth off rookie Mike Minor (3-0), but the 2-1 lead didn't last long. In the bottom half, the Braves knocked out Jonathon Niese (8-7), taking advantage of Castillo's blunder.

Federer Hits Through-the-Legs Winner at Open

Roger Federer has hit another YouTube-worthy, between-the-legs shot at the U.S. Open.

Late in the second set of a first-round match against Brian Dabul of Argentina on Monday night, Federer chased down a lob. A few steps from the wall at the back of the court in Arthur Ashe Stadium, and with his back to the net, Federer smacked the ball through his legs.

Heyward's Homer, 4 RBIs Lead Braves Past Mets, 9-3

Jason Heyward is recovering his power stroke just in time for the Atlanta Braves' September push for the playoffs.

Heyward homered and drove in four runs, Martin Prado drove in three runs and the NL East-leading Braves beat the New York Mets 9-3 on Monday night.

Heyward had four hits, including a three-run homer off Pat Misch in the second inning. He has five homers in August after hitting only one total in June and July, when he was slowed by a thumb injury.
